Below, our skipper of the day, Doug, shows us on the chart where we’ll  be going. Later, Mike holds out the headsail, in light air, to catch more wind.

This morning we raise anchor at Third Beach and set sail for Dutch Harbor. Our skipper of the day, Addi, steers us faithfully to our destination.

Below we see skipper of the day, Mike, working at the winch. Later we do some sailing exercises as we make our way south on the Sakonnet River.

Today we set sail for Potter Cove on Prudence Island under the leadership of skipper of the day Laura. She consults the chart below as we work our way north. Addi learns how to tie a clove hitch and his brother Doug trims the mainsheet.

New students Laura and Mike arrive and are carried out to our sailboat Weatherbird aboard the marina’s launch. We pass by a large ship from Malta. Tomorrow we start sailing and we will also pick up two more students.

Today it was sunny for the first few minutes of sailing and the last hour, otherwise it was completely fogged in. We had visibility of around 100 feet for a few hours while we made our way from Dutch Harbor to Potter Cove on Conanicut Island. Below, Zach raises the anchor. Later, we come across a beautiful former America’s Cup 12 meter racing boat.

Below, skipper of the day Zach, plots our course to guide us swiftly and safely to Dutch Harbor. Later, he and his brother attach the snubber to our anchor chain with a knot called a rolling hitch.

Early morning finds Tod & Zach swimming laps around our boat.

Late afternoon we pick up a mooring in Potter Cove on Prudence Island. No sooner are we secured to the mooring pendant and then notice an elderly man has fallen overboard on another boat that was trying to pick up another mooring. Tod & Zach take our dinghy and go to the rescue. Someone calls the Coast Guard and they arrive within minutes. About an hour later all is well and the individual is recovering from his traumatic experience.
